How to check for available package updates in Linux
List packages with available updates using dnf check-update and apt list --upgradable, without installing anything.
See what updates are available before applying them. These commands only report; they do not change anything.
# RHEL / Oracle Linux (exit code 100 means updates exist)
dnf check-update
# Debian / Ubuntu (refresh metadata first)
sudo apt update
apt list --upgradable
# Only security updates (RHEL/OL)
dnf updateinfo list securityLinuxUpdatesdnf
